We’ve had the privilege of watching Weights & Biases grow from an experimental idea into one of the most important platforms in AI today.
Our history with them goes back years.
They were our Gold Partners in 2021, but their connection to By The Bay runs deeper.

Lukas Biewald, W&B’s co-founder, has spoken at Scale By The Bay 2018 and 2021, always bringing an honest, grounded take on machine learning.
And in 2023, Charles Frye delivered a talk that quickly became a crowd favorite—tying together early computing breakthroughs with today’s LLM boom. He posed a bold question: "Are large language models the kernels of Software 3.0?"
What is Weights & Biases?
In plain terms: W&B is the platform AI developers actually want to use. Founded in 2017 by Lukas Biewald, Chris Van Pelt, and Shawn Lewis—back when “MLOps” wasn’t even a thing— first built behind a karate studio in San Francisco. Today, it helps teams track experiments, version datasets, fine-tune models, and productionize GenAI applications—without duct tape or dashboard overload. Their tools, including W&B Models and W&B Weave, now support some of the biggest names in AI—OpenAI, Meta, Cohere, NVIDIA, Salesforce, Microsoft, and hundreds more.
In early 2025, W&B was acquired by CoreWeave, a milestone that expanded their reach but didn’t change their core mission: to keep giving builders the tools they need to push AI forward.
